HARDOI, which was called “HARI DAWYA” means a place where god take AWATAR two Tme. One was “NARSHING AWATAR” and second is “VAMAN AWATAR”. HARDOI, a town and district of British India, in the Lucknow division of the United Provinces. The town is 63 m. N.E. of Lucknow by rail. Pop. (1901) 12,174. It has a wood-carving industry, saltpetre works , and an export trade in grain. The district of HARDOI has an area of 2331 sq. m. It is a level district watered by the Ganges, Ramganga, Deoha or Garra, Sukheta, Sai, Baita and Gumtithe three rivers first named being navigable by country, boats. Towards the Ganges the land is uneven, and often rises in hillocks of sand cultivated at the base, and their slopes covered with lofty munj grass. Several large Jsils or swamps are scattered throughout the district, the largest being that of Sandi, which is 3 m. long by from I to 2 m. broad. |

These jhils are largely used for irrigation. Large tracts of forest jungle still exist. Leopards, black buck, spotted deer, and nilgai are common; the mallard, teal, grey duck, common goose, and all kinds of waterfowl abound. In 190T the population of the district was 1,092,834, showing a decrease of nearly 2% in the decade. The district contains a larger urban population than any other in Oudh, the largest town being Shahabad, 20,036 in 1901. It is traversed by the Oudh and Rohilkhand railway from Lucknow to Shahjahanpur, and its branches. The chief exports are grain , sugar, hides, tobacco and saltpetre. Ruiyaa garhi is the place of historical significance from the point of view of Freedom Struggle.This place is related with freedom fighter King SRI NARPATI SINGH JI. Alongwith some patriots, Sri Narpati Singh, the man of memorable courage has fought with strong British Army. On 15th April, 1858 General Sir Robert Balpol attacked on the fort with his army but they have faced a lot of losses, many of British soldiers and even Col. Hope were killed in the battle and British army returned back from this area. Later British army destroyed this Ruiyaa Garhi (fort). Out of total area of hardoi (594700 hectare), only 398045 hectare land is used for agriculture purposes, while approximately 18111 hectare land is unused because of sodic & other causes. The project of sodicreclamation is implemented in the district in year 1994. This project is running by Uttar Pradesh Land Development Corporation. Total land of approx. 9000 hectare has been sodicreclaimationed in past 6 years and it is fertile now. All three main crops Rabi, Kharif & Jaiyaj are the main crops of the district. Most of the farmers grow paddy,sugarcane,wheat, vegetable,pulses and oilseeds in their fields. Approximately 14425 hectare land is used for horticulture. The climate and land of hardoi is very suitable for growing guava, different variety of mangos,lameon, herbal etc.The approximate yearly production of mango & guava are 1688 tons and 98 tons respectively.
